DESCRIPTION:HEP’s Statewide Health Equity Gathering \n“Building Solidarity for Vibrant Communities and Families” \non Friday\, October 19th! \nEvent Documents-  \n\nStatewide Gathering Agenda\nReunión Estatal del 2018 Construyendo solidaridad para comunidades y familias exitosas- (Agenda)\nEvaluation form\nEvaluación (Evaluation form)\nCommunity Guidelines\nAcuerdos Comunitarios (Community Guidelines)\n\nOn Friday\, October 19th\, 2018\, the New Mexico Health Equity Partnership (HEP) will offer an all-day gathering (8:30 am – 5:00 pm) in Española at Northern New Mexico College Center for the Arts for partners\, network members\, and allies across New Mexico. This will be followed by a reception (5:30 pm – 7:30 pm) at Northern Rio Grande Heritage Center. “Building Solidarity for Vibrant Communities and Families” Gathering Objectives are: \n\nBuild relations across New Mexico’s diverse communities and sustain a network to advance health equity and social justice.\nFacilitate change\, through peer sharing of community knowledge\, organizing tools and techniques\, and best and promising practices to build community power.\nCreate a space for participants to feel connected\, inspired\, empowered\, engaged\, excited\, and informed.\n\nParticipants will focus on sharing and learning how they do their work: in other words\, what tools\, techniques and processes they use to deeply engage and organize with community members\, strengthen leadership\, and build community power. The tools and techniques shared will be rooted in community members lived experiences. Tools and techniques may include utilizing: \n\nArt (zines\, theatre poetry\, murals\, photos\, graphics\, etc.) for health equity & social justice;\nCommunity organizing tools;\nCommunity and asset mapping tools; and\nResearch methodologies.\n\nThese tools and techniques will be shared via hands on activities\, experiential learning\, and small group dialogues. \nThis gathering is free. Stipends for lodging and transportation are available to HEP core partners and network members traveling 45 miles or more. Scholarships are available for young people to attend. There are two ways to attend this event: you can join us Friday or Saturday night to hear keynote speakers M. Karlos Baca and Rowen White\, or register to attend the Weekend Intensive for an in depth opportunity address racial inequity in the food system. Karlos Baca (Tewa/Diné/Nuche) is an Indigenous Foods Activist and the founder of Taste of Native Cuisine\, an Indigenous food cooperative based out of Southern Ute in Southwestern Colorado\, and focusing on pre-colonial Indigenous Foodways. His work has been featured in the Zagat Foodways series \, AJ+ and most recently in Edible Southwest Colorado. Although cooking is his passion\, the majority of his time is spent teaching traditional foraging methods\, Indigenous agriculture\, seed saving\, and cooking technologies to youth groups\, teaching in schools\, and working to help decolonize the food systems within those communities\, while pushing forward with Indigenous Food Sovereignty initiatives on the tribal level\, and is currently engaging in creating racial and food justice frameworks in the Four Corners region. He is foremost a son\, a brother\, father to six amazing children\, and a grandfather.\nRegister here! \nRowen White \nRowen White is a Seed Keeper and farmer from the Mohawk community of Akwesasne and a passionate activist for indigenous seed and food sovereignty. She is the director and founder of theSierra Seeds\, an innovative organic seed stewardship organization focusing on local seed and education\, based in Nevada City CA. Rowen is the current National Project Coordinator and advisor for the Indigenous Seed Keeper Network\, which is an initiative of the Native American Food Sovereignty Alliance\, a non-profit organization aimed at leveraging resources to support tribal food sovereignty projects. The mission of the Indigenous Seed Keepers Network is to nourish and assist the growing Seed Sovereignty Movement across Turtle Island. Rowen’s passion is in teaching and mentoring\, and has developed many curricula which focus on holistic\, indigenous permaculture based approach to seed stewardship which honors the many layers of seed culture; from practical hands on skills\, cultural context and memory with guiding principles that are rooted in an indigenous ecology of relations. She teaches and facilitates creative seed stewardship immersions around the country within tribal and small farming communities\, as well as offering an online distance learning seasonal mentorship called Seed Seva. She weaves stories of seeds\, food\, culture and sacred Earth stewardship on her blog\, Seed Songs. Follow her seed journeys at www.sierraseeds.org \nWEEKEND INTENSIVE \nThe Weekend Intensive will begin Friday evening and take place from 9am-8pm on Saturday and 9am-3pm on Sunday. The Intensive will be dedicated to addressing inequities and racial injustice in the food system and developing strategies for change. Topics that will be addressed include: \n• History of Food Warfare\n• Immigration\n• Environmental Justice: Soil\, Water\, Air\n• Plant Kinship: human and plant relations\n• Seed Keeping\n• Labor in the food system\n• Developing regional connections and collaborations\n• Visioning and committing to action for justice\n• Self-Care \nYou must pre-register to attend the Weekend Intensive here. We will be accommodating people on a first come\, first serve basis. We have a limited number of places for people to stay\, as well as support with gas expenses and childcare. All meals will be provided for participants in the Weekend Intensive by the iCollective. Translation into Diné and Spanish will be provided. Please let us know if you have any other needs that we can support with in the registration form. \nJanene Yazzie will be the lead facilitator for the Weekend Intensive. \n Janene is born for Tsi’naajinii and To’dich’ii’nii. Her maternal grandparents areNaalani Dine’e and her paternal grandparents are Dzilghai. She lives in GallupNew Mexico\, and was born and raised on the Navajo Nation. She’s an indigenous rights advocate with a particular focus on sustainable economic development. Her business\, Sixth World Solutions\, works with Dine’(Navajo) communities to develop projects\, programs and policies that promote sustainability\, environmental justice\, and self-governance. Sheco-founded the first Navajo Nation community-led watershed planning program which serves to exercise local control in the sustainable management\, restoration\, and protection of natural resources. She also has worked throughout the Southwest and Four Corners Region for water and food security\, and has fought against uranium contamination\, pollution from fracking and the effects of the Gold King Mine Spill. Janene has earned international recognition for her advocacy of indigenous rights. DESCRIPTION:Join your neighbors for an update on efforts to form a citizen Blue Ribbon Task Force to address uranium pollution. \nJoin us!\nThursday\, Sept. 21\n6:00 to 8:00 p.m.\nGallup Community Service Center\n410 Bataan Veterans St.\, Gallup NM 87301 \nAs you are likely aware\, many local residents and community organizations have been grappling with legacy uranium mining waste for decades and have been working toward addressing the health and environmental impacts of this dangerous waste\, such as pushing for clean up and health studies. Communities in McKinley County that are directly impacted by uranium legacy waste have told us that they do not support new proposals to restart uranium mining that will impact their families. \nAfter four years of organizing\, McKinley County communities living with uranium pollution have asked the county commission to develop a local ordinance that would help put stronger protections in place to keep our families safe from mining pollution. Despite the commission passing an evasive resolution in its place\, they verbally committed to forming a task force to create space for the communities that are directly impacted to share with the commission and determine solutions. Unfortunately\, they have since wavered on that commitment — which means we need to come together as a community to remind our decision-makers why addressing uranium pollution is critical in McKinley County. \nPlease join us next Thursday night to learn more about where this process is and how you can get involved. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]On May 4 and 5\, 2015\, the San Juan Community team co-hosted\, with the New Mexico Health Equity Partnership\, the first New Mexico Statewide Health Equity Gathering held in Farmington\, New Mexico. Titled\, “Strengthening Our Health Equity Network\,” The Gathering brought together 70 representatives from the NMHEP team\, NMHEP Core teams\, Health Impact Assessment teams\, Health Councils\, the National Collaborative for Health Equity\, and community partners from around the state. The gathering was designed to encourage network and alliance building; foster peer-to-peer learning; organize and educate around policy issues and health in all policies; and incorporate social justice and the arts into the efforts of the network.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][image_with_animation image_url=”184″ img_size=”600×400″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
